There are many styles of belly dance and all belly dance is like learning a new language.   

In Oriental or Traditional belly dance it is about letting the music direct your body movement through emotions formed by connecting with the music. It is letting yourself tell the story of the music through your body. Group dance exist but they use choreography so members of the Troupe can rehearse and learn the moves that fit in. Usually a Teacher or Troupe Director will choreograph a piece based on how it speaks to them, emotionally. 

The A to Z Egyptian Oriental Technique uses moves and combinations of varying lengths and difficulty to train the body. This system teaches about various instruments in Oriental music and encourages the dancer to connect emotionally to each sound to direct the dancer to movement choice or flow. The dancer uses a somatic approach to feel each move or combination in their own body as it is learned. Movements are separated into elemental energies to connect the dancer with how the move flows. Heavy, earthy moves; floating, airy moves; fiery, fast, and sharp moves and circular, flowing, watery moves. It can be used by Solo dancers or in Troupe Choreographies. This form usually stays with the more Traditional Middle Eastern Music in performance.   

Tribal Belly Dance, or any other cue-driven improv form of belly dance, is about learning a new vocabulary of specific moves and/or combinations and then connecting in the moment with other dancers, trusting that your body will pick up on those subtle cues. There is no preset choreography , it is truly "creation in the moment".  It is an amazing exercise for the brain, regardless of your age. Tribal Belly Dance is the beautiful flow of an unspoken language between 2 or more dancers in a moment of time. It is an American style of belly dance that honors the movement of various countries and cultures as inspiration for the moves it creates and uses.  Our studio offers both Global Caravan and Fat Chance  Tribal  Bellydance

Fly Fusion is also a  cue driven form of belly dance.  It  too incorporates its own vocabulary of movement, some harken to the movements and styles of various cultures. This style allows them to flow into the more modern music of today. Moves can be snaky, and slinky, pop, and lock. It has its own very distinct vocabulary of moves to draw from in the dance. It works with stall movements, or in between movements, that flow into combinations and back into stall movements. It is creative, unique, funky and fun !
